World Border

What is a World Border in Minecraft? All You Need to Know.

A world border is a boundary that prevents players from traveling beyond a set distance from the center point, taking damage if they try to pass it. Introduced in Minecraft 1.8, the world border creates an invisible barrier that stops infinite exploration, keeps your world file size manageable, and prevents players from wandering into ungenerated terrain that could cause lag.

It's an essential tool for server administrators who want to control world growth and maintain performance.

What Is a World Border?

The world border is a square-shaped invisible wall that surrounds your spawn point. When active, it:youtube

  • Blocks player movement beyond the boundary
  • Prevents teleportation outside the border using commands
  • Inflicts damage on players who remain outside the border
  • Shows visual warnings as players approach the edge (red particles and screen vignette)
  • Stops chunk generation beyond the border, limiting world file growth

Unlike physical walls, the world border is perfectly square, can be resized at any time, and doesn't require building materials.

How to Set a World Border

Using Commands (Vanilla Minecraft)

The /worldborder command controls all border settings:

Set the center point:

/worldborder center <x> <z>

Example: /worldborder center 0 0 places the border center at spawn coordinates.

Define the border size (diameter in blocks):

/worldborder set <size>

Example: /worldborder set 10000 creates a 10,000-block diameter border (5,000 blocks in each direction from center).

Gradually expand or shrink the border:

/worldborder set <size> <seconds>

Example: /worldborder set 20000 3600 expands the border to 20,000 blocks over 1 hour.

Add to existing border size:

/worldborder add <blocks>

Example: /worldborder add 1000 increases the current border by 1,000 blocks.

Using WorldBorder Plugin (Spigot/Paper)

The WorldBorder plugin offers more features than vanilla commands:

/wb set 5000 # Set 5000-block radius from center
/wb shape round # Make border circular instead of square
/wb fill # Pre-generate all chunks inside the border
/wb trim # Delete all chunks outside the border

The plugin is especially useful for pre-generating worlds and managing multiple world borders per dimension.

Border Damage and Buffer Zones

Players who venture outside the world border take damage:

Set damage amount (hearts per second):

/worldborder damage amount <value>

Example: /worldborder damage amount 2.0 inflicts 2 hearts per second.

  • Default: 0.2 damage per second per block outside the border

Set damage buffer (safe zone in blocks):

/worldborder damage buffer <blocks>

Example: /worldborder damage buffer 5 lets players safely stand 5 blocks outside the border before damage starts.

  • Default: 5 blocks

This creates a "warning zone" where players can briefly cross the border without dying instantly, giving them time to turn back.

Why Use a World Border?

Control World Size

Without a border, players can explore infinitely, causing your world file to grow to hundreds of gigabytes:

  • A 10,000-block diameter world = ~25-50 GB depending on exploration density
  • A 20,000-block diameter world = ~100-200 GB
  • Unlimited exploration = potentially terabytes over time

World borders cap growth at a predictable size.

Improve Server Performance

Generating new chunks as players explore causes lag spikes:

  • Pre-generating chunks inside the border eliminates real-time generation lag
  • Limiting exploration reduces RAM usage and disk I/O
  • Smaller worlds load faster on server startup

Enable Competitive Gameplay

World borders create natural competition for limited resources:

  • UHC (Ultra Hardcore) servers shrink the border over time, forcing players into combat
  • Faction servers set borders to concentrate PvP activity
  • Survival challenges use small borders to increase difficulty

Prepare for Major Updates

Before updates that add new biomes or structures, you can:

  1. Set a world border to protect explored areas
  2. Delete (trim) chunks outside the border
  3. When the update releases, expand the border to generate new content

This ensures players discover fresh terrain with update features instead of old chunks.

Pre-Generating Chunks with WorldBorder

The WorldBorder plugin's /wb fill command generates all chunks inside the border before players explore:

/wb fill
/wb fill 5

The number (default 20) controls how many chunks per second to generate:

  • 20 chunks/second: Fast generation but causes noticeable lag
  • 5 chunks/second: Slower but keeps server playable during generation

Important: Pre-generation can take hours or days depending on border size and how much vCores your server has:

  • 5,000 radius = ~6-12 hours
  • 10,000 radius = ~24-72 hours
  • 20,000 radius = several days

Always run pre-generation before opening your server to players.

Common World Border Sizes

Border Diameter Radius Area Recommended For
2,000 blocks 1,000 Small Minigame arenas, challenge maps
10,000 blocks 5,000 Medium Small survival servers (10-30 players)
20,000 blocks 10,000 Large Medium servers (30-100 players)
50,0000 blocks 25,000 Larger than Large Large networks (100+ players)
💡
Note: The command uses diameter, not radius. /worldborder set 10000 creates a border 5,000 blocks from center in each direction.

Visual Warnings and Effects

As players approach the world border:

  • At 5 blocks away: Red/purple particles appear at the border wall
  • At the edge: A red vignette effect darkens the screen edges
  • Beyond buffer zone: Damage ticks begin, with screen shake effects

These visual cues warn players before they take lethal damage.

WorldBorder on Bedrock Edition

Vanilla Bedrock Edition doesn't support the /worldborder command. However, you can create custom borders using:

  • Command blocks with /teleport to bounce players back
  • Structure blocks to build physical barrier walls
  • Bedrock-specific plugins on dedicated servers

These workarounds lack the smooth functionality of Java Edition's native world border.
