Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions server owners ask most.

It's the two lines of text under your server's name in the multiplayer server list. MOTD stands for message of the day.

Copy it from the editor (pick Vanilla & modded, or Paper & Spigot), paste it after motd= in server.properties, then restart the server. On WiseHosting, open your server in the panel, go to Properties and paste it into the motd field on the General tab.

Two lines, each up to 267 pixels wide in the server list (271 on older versions like 1.20). That's about 44 normal letters, fewer in bold. Longer lines wrap, and anything past the second row is hidden. The editor warns you when a line is too long.

Click Center in the editor. Minecraft can't center text, so the editor puts the exact number of spaces in front of the line. It mixes normal (4 px) and bold (5 px) spaces, so the line lands on the exact pixel.

Usually it's & codes in server.properties (the server only reads §), a § saved in the wrong text encoding (it shows as § on servers older than 1.20), or a plugin that sets its own MOTD. The editor writes § as \u00A7, which works on every version.

A color code turns bold and every other format off, so the color has to come first: &6&l, not &l&6. The editor always writes them in the right order.

Yes on Paper and Spigot (Minecraft 1.16+), straight in server.properties. Velocity, BungeeCord and MOTD plugins like MiniMOTD support them too. Vanilla, Fabric and Forge only show the 16 classic colors, so the editor swaps custom colors for the nearest one there.

Save a 64 × 64 PNG as server-icon.png in your server's main folder, next to server.properties, and restart. Other sizes don't show at all. Our Server Icon Converter turns any image into one.

No. Each player names your server when they add it to their list. Your MOTD shows to everyone, so put your server's name in it.

The server reads the MOTD when it starts, so restart after changing it. If it still doesn't change, a plugin such as MiniMOTD, a proxy or Geyser may be setting it instead.

Use the server-name line in the Bedrock server's server.properties. Bedrock's server list shows one line, and the underline and strikethrough codes are colors there. Pick Bedrock in the editor's copy section to get a line that works.

Vanilla Minecraft can only scramble text (the obfuscated format). To switch between several MOTDs, use a plugin such as MiniMOTD.
