A tick is Minecraft’s smallest unit of time. The game runs at 20 ticks per second, so 1 second = 20 ticks, 1 minute = 1,200 ticks, and 1 hour = 72,000 ticks.
A redstone tick is 2 game ticks (0.1 seconds at normal speed). Most redstone components, like repeaters, update on this slower cadence, so redstone ticks are always half the game ticks.
An in-game day is one Minecraft day-night cycle: 24,000 game ticks, which is 20 real minutes at 20 TPS. The real-life fields (days, hours, minutes, seconds) measure actual elapsed time instead, so 1 real day is far longer than 1 in-game day.
TPS is ticks per second and MSPT is how many milliseconds each tick takes. A healthy server runs at 20 TPS, which is 50 MSPT. A busy server drops below 20 TPS, so every tick takes longer in real time. Type your real TPS or MSPT into the calculator to see how long things really take.
It helps you fast-forward farms or time datapack functions, /schedule commands, and other tick-based systems without doing math by hand.
Drop the game-tick number straight into commands like `/schedule function <name> <ticks>` or `/tick step <ticks>` (run `/tick freeze` first to pause time, on Java Edition with cheats or operator permissions). It also works for timing redstone clocks, farms, and datapack functions.
