Vanilla Minecraft isn't very scary. Zombies are slow, and most mobs aren't very threatening. Horror modpacks add a little scare by replacing mobs, killing the lights, and adding things that hunt you.
This list covers ten Minecraft horror modpacks worth playing.
Many modpacks in the list have a one-click install option in the WiseHosting game panel
What makes a good horror modpack?
A good horror pack changes what you're afraid of, not just how dark it is. Look for threats that behave differently from vanilla mobs, an atmosphere built from sound and lighting, and some structure (quests, a campaign, or a timer) that gives you a reason to keep going.
If you plan to play with friends, add two more checks: the pack has a server pack, and it's still getting updates. The list below is in no particular order, and the download counts and versions were checked in October 2026.
| Pack | Downloads | Loader | Minecraft version | Server pack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DeceasedCraft | 9.6M | Forge | 1.20.1 (1.18.2 also listed) | Yes |
| Horrorland 2 | 175K | NeoForge | 1.21.1 | Yes |
| Endless Horror | 1.4M | Forge | 1.19.2 | Not listed |
| DREAD (Dread Reborn) | 2.4M | Forge | 1.19.2 | No |
| The Fog | 1.0M | Forge | 1.19.2 | Not listed |
| Into The Backrooms | 1.9M | Fabric | 1.20.1 | Yes |
| TREPIDATION | 61K | Forge | 1.12.2 | Yes |
| Cave Horror Project | 6.1M | Forge | 1.20.1 | Yes |
| Whispers in the Void | 70K | Forge | 1.20.1 | Yes |
| Fear Nightfall | 2.8M | Forge | 1.20.1 | Yes |
DeceasedCraft
9.6M downloads | CurseForge | Forge 1.20.1
DeceasedCraft is the odd one out. It isn't pure horror, but the zombie apocalypse setting is close enough. Think Project Zomboid or 7 Days to Die, in Minecraft. You loot randomly generated cities full of infected, work through the tech tree to build better gear, and eventually push into the radioactive wasteland to find a cure.
The newest files on CurseForge are a 1.20.1 beta (v5.10) that leads into a planned v6.0 overhaul. The older 1.18.2 releases are still listed if you want the stable version

Server files: The server pack for the latest beta is on the CurseForge Files tab.
Horrorland 2
175K downloads | CurseForge | NeoForge 1.21.1
Horrorland 2 mixes psychological and classic horror. It adds new dimensions and creatures that hunt you, plus sounds and visuals that make you feel you're never alone. Horror quests give you something to progress through.
With 323 mods, it's one of the bigger packs on the list, and it's the only one built for NeoForge 1.21.1, so it's also using the newest Minecraft version in this list.
Server files: A "Horrorland 2 (Server Pack)" is listed on the CurseForge Files tab.
Endless Horror
1.4M downloads | CurseForge | Forge 1.19.2
Endless Horror goes hard with the horror mods. It has more than 150 mods, and over 100 of them are horror mods, covering psychological horror, jump scares, analog horror, and more. A few extra content mods keep longer runs interesting, and the included shaders push the mood further.
It's also the heaviest download here at about 1 GB. If you want one pack that throws every horror trope at you at once, this is it.
Server files: No dedicated server pack is listed on the CurseForge Files tab. The author has pulled mods in the past because they broke multiplayer, so read the changelog before you update a live server.
DREAD (Dread Reborn)
2.4M downloads | CurseForge | Forge 1.19.2
DREAD removes every vanilla hostile mob and replaces them with creatures that stalk and chase you. Caves and foggy nights create an uneasy environment. The 3.0 "Reborn" update added a few guns, multiple main biomes, seasons, thirst, new shaders and textures, and more horror mods. The latest release is 3.1.1 from July 2026.

Server files: The author says there is no server pack at the moment. Check the DREAD page on CurseForge for updates, or use a host that installs CurseForge modpacks directly.
The Fog
1.0M downloads | CurseForge | Forge 1.19.2
The Fog is built around Herobrine and inspired by the popular From the Fog mod. It combines 44 horror mods into a modpack where reality becomes a nightmare. It keeps a vanilla Minecraft look and doesn't rely on shaders, so it suits players who prefer old-school Minecraft.
The modpack has a single release, uploaded in November 2023, so it hasn't been updated since.
Server files: No server pack is listed on the CurseForge page.
Into The Backrooms
1.9M downloads | CurseForge | Fabric 1.20.1
This pack merges the Backrooms into Minecraft with the VHS shader and liminal space look. You get flickering lights, endless hallways, strange entities, and anomalies. There are five levels, two entities, and a set of horror events.
To get in, you suffocate yourself in sand or gravel. This modpack stands out because it doesn't really feel like you're playing Minecraft.

Server files: A server pack is listed under Minecraft 1.20.1 on the CurseForge Files tab.
TREPIDATION
61K downloads | CurseForge | Forge 1.12.2
Trepidation turns Minecraft into a speedrunning horror game. You spawn in the Nether with a timer counting down, then fight upward through vertically stacked dimensions (the Erebus, the Mind's Abyss, the Surface, and the End) to kill the Ender Dragon before time runs out. Every dimension has its own mobs, bosses, and barriers.
It's inspired by Hades, Dark Souls, and DOOM Eternal, so expect a challenge more than a slow scare. The modpack runs on Minecraft 1.12.2, which means a self-hosted server needs Java 8.
Server files: The v1.3.1 server pack is listed on the CurseForge page.
Cave Horror Project
6.1M downloads | CurseForge | Forge 1.20.1
Cave Horror Project is built around classic creepypasta myths and legends. Herobrine haunts singleplayer worlds. The Cave Dweller follows you through caves and gets louder as it gets closer. The Man from the Fog follows you everywhere and closes in if you ignore him.
A multi-chapter quest book gives the pack a story to follow, and the Spooklementary shaders create a spooky atmosphere by default. It's the most downloaded dedicated horror pack on this list.

Server files: Each release has a matching server pack on the CurseForge Files tab.
Whispers in the Void
70K downloads | CurseForge | Forge 1.20.1
Whispers in the Void is a quest-driven horror pack. You explore cursed ruins, haunted forests, and forgotten villages while Herobrine, the Cave Dweller, and Arthropod Phobia keep you on edge. Guided quests give you direction as you go deeper.
It's great for playing with friends and works with several horror shader packs, including Complementary and Hysteria.
Server files: A server pack is listed on the CurseForge Files tab.
Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos
2.8M downloads | CurseForge | Forge 1.20.1
Fear Nightfall is built for co-op and designed to be difficult. It has a campaign and a large quest book split into chapters, each with its own story and objectives. It pulls in most of the popular horror figures, and staying in the dark too long is not the best idea.
If you want a horror pack with real story structure behind the scares, this is the one. It was last updated in September 2025.
Server files: The latest server pack (v1.1.4) is on the CurseForge Files tab.
Playing horror modpacks with friends
Many of these packs are better with other people, and the server is the part to plan. Seven of the ten have a server pack. Endless Horror, DREAD, and The Fog don't, so it's a more involved process to start playing with friends.
Bigger packs like Endless Horror and Horrorland 2 need more memory than a small vanilla survival server. Our guide on how much RAM a modded Minecraft server needs covers how to size it.
If you'd rather skip the setup and just play minecraft with friends, WiseHosting installs the available modpacks in a couple of minutes:
- Head to your WiseHosting game panel and locate the Version tab
- Choose Modpacks and select CurseForge from the dropdown filter
- Search for the modpack you want and click Install
- Click Start to start your server
- Copy the IP and join the world

Final thoughts
Pick by what kind of fear you want. For a story to follow, go with Cave Horror Project or Fear Nightfall. For pure scares, try DREAD or Endless Horror. For something different, try Into The Backrooms or TREPIDATION, and for classic zombies, DeceasedCraft.
