Put a code in front of the text you want to color. §6 makes everything after it gold, and §l makes it bold. Plugins and their config files use & instead, like &6. On Java you can't type § in the game itself, so codes go into files like server.properties or come from plugins. On Bedrock you can type them straight into chat, signs, books and item names.

Copy it from the table above. On Windows, hold Alt and type 0167 on the number pad. On a Mac with a US keyboard, press Option and 6. On iPhone, hold the & key and pick §. On Android, it's on the second page of symbols on most keyboards.

Not in vanilla Java. Minecraft won't let you type § in chat, and a message with § in it gets you kicked. On servers with a chat plugin such as EssentialsX Chat, & codes work if the server gives you permission. On Bedrock you can type § codes straight into chat.

On Bedrock, type § and a code on the sign, like §bHello. On Java, signs remove color codes, so dye the sign to color all of its text. For several colors on one Java sign, use a command or a plugin like EssentialsX.

They're the same codes with a different first character. The game itself only reads §. Plugins read & because it's easy to type, and turn it into § for you. So use & in plugin configs and § in the motd line of server.properties. Our MOTD Editor writes the whole MOTD for you.

On Java, a color code turns bold, italic and every other format off. Put the color first and the format after it: &6&l, not &l&6. On Bedrock, formats stay on after a color code, so use §r to clear them.

Not with § codes, which only have the colors in the table. On Java, commands like /tellraw take any hex color, for example color:"#FF8800", or a name from the table, like color:"gold". Many plugins, EssentialsX included, also read &#FF8800. Bedrock has no custom colors.

Bedrock has 13 more colors: §g Minecoin Gold, §w Party Blue and 11 armor trim colors from §h Quartz to §v Resin. Two of them, §m Redstone and §n Copper, use the letters Java uses for strikethrough and underline, so Bedrock has no codes for those.
