Use a smithing table. Put the trim template in the first slot, the armor in the second and the trim material in the third. The template and the material are used up.

Each template has its own place. Sentry is in pillager outposts, Vex in woodland mansions, Wild in jungle temples, Coast in shipwrecks, Dune in desert pyramids, Wayfinder, Raiser, Shaper and Host in trail ruins, Ward and Silence in ancient cities, Tide from elder guardians, Snout in bastion remnants, Rib in nether fortresses, Eye in strongholds, Spire in end cities, Bolt in trial chamber vaults and Flow in ominous vaults.

Craft the template with 7 diamonds and its base block, like cobblestone for Sentry or netherrack for Rib. You get 2 templates back, so each craft adds one.

Silence. Only about 1 in 80 ancient city chests has one, a 1.25% chance. Ward comes from the same chests and is 4 times more common.

There are 18 trim patterns and 11 materials: amethyst, copper, diamond, emerald, gold, iron, lapis, netherite, quartz, redstone and resin. Any pattern works with any material on any armor piece.

Iron, copper, gold, diamond and netherite trims switch to a darker shade on armor made of the same thing, so the pattern still shows. The preview does this too.

No. You can only put a different trim on top, which replaces the old one and uses up another template and material.

No. Trims only change how armor looks. Protection, durability and enchantments stay the same.
