A UUID is a permanent 128-bit ID that Minecraft uses to track a player instead of their name, so their data survives a name change.

The online UUID is the real Mojang account ID (version 4) used by authenticated premium servers. The offline UUID is a name-based ID (version 3) used by cracked or LAN servers, computed from the name itself.

The offline UUID is generated from the exact name, so a different capitalization produces a different UUID. Online lookups ignore case because Mojang normalizes the name.

To whitelist or ban a player who has not joined yet, set permissions, or find their playerdata file. All of those key on the UUID rather than the username.

That name has no paid Java account, so there is no online UUID. The offline UUID still works for cracked or LAN servers.

The online UUID never changes, so whitelists and bans keep working after a name change. The offline UUID is made from the name, so it changes with it.
