25565 and 19132

What are 25565 and 19132 in Minecraft? All You Need to Know.

25565 and 19132 are the default port numbers for Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition servers that players connect through unless configured otherwise. In most setups you never see or change these ports directly, but they are what routers, firewalls, and hosting panels use to route player traffic to the right server.

What 25565 and 19132 Are

  • 25565 is the default TCP port for Minecraft Java Edition servers. If you enter just an IP or domain in the Java client without a port, it assumes 25565 automatically.
  • 19132 is the default UDP port for Minecraft Bedrock Edition servers over IPv4; 19133 is the default for IPv6. Many guides refer to “19132–19133” as the Bedrock default port range.

These defaults are defined in the server configuration files:

  • Java: server-port=25565 in server.properties
  • Bedrock: server-port=19132 (IPv4) and server-portv6=19133 (IPv6) in the Bedrock server config

How Players Use These Ports

When players connect:

  • Java Edition: They enter example.com or example.com:port. If no port is specified, the client tries 25565. To use a non-default port, you append it, like example.com:25566.
  • Bedrock Edition: They enter an IP/domain and port in the “Add Server” screen. The default is 19132, but you can change it if your server runs on a different port.

On the network side:

  • Home-hosted Java servers require port forwarding TCP 25565 to the server’s local IP.
  • Bedrock servers require forwarding UDP 19132 (and optionally 19133) to the server’s IP.

Hosting providers often map these defaults behind the scenes so your server can still be reached on 25565 (Java) or 19132 (Bedrock) even if the internal port is different.

Changing the Default Ports

You can change these ports if needed:

  • Java: Edit server-port in server.properties to another value between 1 and 65535, then restart the server.
  • Bedrock: Change server-port and server-portv6 in the Bedrock config, or remap them at the Docker/router level while still listening on 19132 internally.

Common reasons to change:

  • Running multiple servers on the same machine (e.g., 25565, 25566, 25567).
  • Your ISP blocks the default ports (common for 19132), so you expose a different external port and map it to the internal default.
  • Avoiding conflict with an existing service already using 25565 or 19132.

If you change the port, players must include it when connecting (for Java: host:port; for Bedrock: set the custom port in the server entry).

Why These Defaults Matter

Using the default ports:

  • Simplifies connection for players (no need to type a port on Java if using 25565).
  • Aligns with most guides and port-forwarding tutorials, which assume 25565 for Java and 19132/19133 for Bedrock.
  • Can be a “premium” feature with some hosts that charge extra for 25565, since it allows cleaner IPs and easier direct connects.

For server admins, understanding 25565 and 19132 is essential for:

  • Correct port forwarding on home networks.
  • Configuring firewalls to allow inbound connections on the right protocol (TCP for Java, UDP for Bedrock).
  • Running multiple servers or proxies on one machine without conflicts.
