FPS (frames per second) measures how many individual images your Minecraft client renders and displays on your screen each second. Higher FPS results in smoother gameplay and more responsive controls.
Imagine Minecraft gameplay as a flipbook. Your computer draws a new "page" (frame) of Minecraft constantly. More frames = smoother visuals:
FPS measures client performance while TPS measures server performance. These are independent metrics.
A server running at 20 TPS can still feel laggy if your client runs at 20 FPS. Conversely, 144 FPS won't fix lag caused by a server running at 18 TPS due to overload.
Players often blame "server lag" for issues that are actually low client FPS on their own hardware.
| FPS Range | Experience |
|---|---|
| 0-20 | Unplayable |
| 20-30 | Very choppy |
| 30-45 | Playable but stuttery |
| 45-60 | Smooth |
| 60+ | Ideal for most players |
| 144+ | Competitive advantage |
60 FPS is the target. Anything below feels choppy. Anything above needs expensive hardware and monitors to actually see the difference.
